Netflix + FIOS + Tivo – Video on Demand Triumvirate

Last month, my family was one of the first households in America to benefit from the new Netflix + Tivo service which we get delivered over the Verizon FIOS network.  I can tell you that so far it has lived up to our expectations.

One caveat is that we are underwhelmed by the number of titles; 12,000 titles sound like a lot until you realize that Netflix is counting every episode of a TV series like 30 Rock.

One unusual technical issue has cropped up.  Some movies have a synch problem between the video and audio tracks.  We called Netflix technical support and they admitted that Cool Hand Luke and The Tale of the Weeping Camel both have soundtrack synch issues.   Cool Hand Luke is off by a few seconds while the Weeping Camel — which is a very interesting film — is off by a few minutes.

The other great thing about the Netflix service is that it takes the pressure out of picking a movie because you can select as many as you like and delete them from the Instant Queue when your are done, so there is no real commitment anxiety.  This has caused our family to watch a lot more independent and foriegn films.  Last night we watched La Vie en Rose.

Tivo needs to really hype its Netflix connection.  People seem to have one of two views of Tivo:  (1) the greatest thing since sliced bread, can’t live without it, cost is no object; or (2) tired old expensive technology, who needs it, my cable DVR is good enough.  Tivo really needs to work on its image outside of its community of addicts.  I personally don’t understand the origin of this negative perception of Tivo and would be interested if anyone out there has some insight on it.
